I often get asked by family and friends on how to lose or maintain weight. Here’s the magic formula on HOW to lose weight. Before we begin, I’ll say this: it’s a simple formula, but it’s not easy. The formula for losing weight is simple because there are only two steps — but it’s not easy because you may not want to do these two steps. First step: calculate your TDEE, or your “daily calorie allowance.” Second step: eat less than your “daily calorie allowance.” Result: you save calories → you lose weight. By the way, it’s the same formula for saving money. First step: calculate your income. Second step: spend less than your income. Result: you save money. Here’s how to calculate it. First, calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is the minimum number of calories your body needs to function — things like breathing, thinking, and basic bodily processes. Your BMR accounts for about 60–70% of your body’s total energy use. It’s influenced by many factors like age, height, weight, body composition, sex, hormones, and even climate. So everyone’s calorie needs are different. For example, a 2-year-old girl will have a much lower BMR than a 30-year-old muscular man. Next, factor in exercise and daily activity. This is another important part of your total energy use. Your calorie needs will vary depending on what you do — for example, playing chess (which is actually a real Olympic-recognised sport!) versus swimming or cycling. When you add your BMR and your activity level together, you get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). I recommend using an online calculator to estimate this — it makes things much easier. Once you have your TDEE, you can work from there. For example, if your TDEE is 3000 calories a day, you could eat 2500 calories a day to create a 500-calorie deficit. Over time, that leads to weight loss. To give you a rough idea: 1 kilogram of body weight is about 7,700 calories. So a deficit of 500 calories per day would take roughly 15 days to lose about 1 kg. It might sound a bit complicated — like math — but think of it like money again. If you earn $1 a day and want $10, it will take you 10 days to save $10, right? It’s the same idea here. You’re just figuring out your daily “calorie savings” and how long it takes to reach your goal. I’m here to teach you about wellness, not overwhelm you with math. Now that you understand the formula, you can figure out the numbers in your own way. You’ve got this 💗
