This is my third year celebrating Independence Day in Guatemala City and I love these celebrations! My husband went to Colegio San José de Los Infantes which is one of the most famous school bands that takes to the streets to perform and we enjoy supporting them! 👏 The celebrations take place on two days as September 14th is the buildup and symbolic celebration, while September 15 is the actual Independence Day and the biggest day for formal ceremonies and parades. On September 14, the Antorcha de la Independencia (the Independence Torch) will take place with groups of groups of people traveling to designated locations to receive a torch and then run or walk with the flame back to their hometown or community. The symbolism is that the flame represents freedom, independence, and the connection between Central American communities. On the 14th there are also many parades with school marching bands performing. Typically there are over 100 schools in Guatemala City that participate but most towns and cities across the country also have parades with marching bands. On the afternoon and evening of the 14th, the government holds a more formal celebration with the president addressing the nation, raising of the flag, singing the national anthem, and fireworks. On the 15th there are also flag ceremonies, a big school band parade, marimba, live music, speeches and patriotic activities, and more! Independence Day is NOT just a celebration in Guatemala City. I only have videos of the capital because this is where I live in Guatemala. Maybe I'll experience the celebrations somewhere else in Guatemala next year. Of course... there's always fireworks with every celebration in Guatemala! 🙌🇬🇹 Do you want to learn more about what it's like to live in Guatemala? On Substack I'm sharing information about what I do for work, how to apply for residency, cost of living information, and more! #guate #guatemalacheck #ciudadeguatemala #guatemala_502 #diadelaindependencia
