Unfortunately A lot of them still go by “Mejorar la raza" (to improve the race by essentially whitening it) to this day. Its up to them to deconstruct from this mentality. Unfortunately this is very true. I’m born and raised in Colombia, we were subconsciously taught to favor European features from a very young age even though most of the country’s culture came from countries in West Africa. I unlearned this very quickly after moving to the US and learning about the true history of this country, and also my own heritage. When I went back, I saw Colombia very differently. Statues started standing out more.. specifically one of a conquistador with a chained black woman at his feet. It broke my heart and disgusted me to see that nobody cared or thought there was something wrong with it. Christopher Columbus statues as well. Whenever I’d express myself about it I’d be made fun of or told to relax. Definitely sickly romanticized.
