Love your posts. The punishment is likely harsher in China compared to here in the US, so noone dares to steal. There are lots of deviants here. What would be the punishment for taking the earphones?

It’s partly culture and mostly potential repercussions. Who would want to go to jail for 3-10 years for petty theft? The risk isn’t with the reward.

Lol…scared of being jailed! Not like our jails! They go, never seen again! Accountability.

I love this video. American in Japan since 1997, also speaks Chinese, a little but well. I want people to think about how desperate you need to be to steal things, and try to sell them to other people so desperate to get those things even though they know they are stolen. That isn't just culture; it's the state of your society. In many societies, this may blow your mind but, you can actually leave your most valuable things out in the open while you go to the restroom. In East Asia, that's normal. In Japan, the mall isn't open until it's open, but similarly when it's closing, or even during open hours, there's really nothing stopping you from grabbing and walking away with some thousand dollar or more thing. And it's not about morals or culture; it's about living in a well ordered society where no one is so desperate that they would do that.

Kind of off topic but does China have alcohol and drug addiction problems? If so, how is it managed?

Went to Beijing in 2008. Never felt unsafe. Well except for when crossing the street. Or sitting in the front set of a taxi 😳😂😂. People were so nice. People talked to me every time I went anywhere.

Heavy surveillance and a social credit system. They will cut you right off transportation, making purchases, entering buildings etc if you dared steal.

Here in the UK, even with the risk of the punishments, some of our teens would just walk in with hoods on and masks to their eyes and steal everything or just trash it for "fun". They would think they couldn't get caught
