When Thanatos demonstrated, Sisyphus bound him instead, effectively imprisoning death itself. As a result, no one on Earth could die. When Thanatos came to claim her, he did so according to his duty, without malice. However, the hero Heracles later confronted Thanatos and wrestled him, ultimately forcing him to release Alcestis back to the living world. This myth is significant because it portrays Thanatos not as undefeatable, but as bound by rules and capable of being challenged by extraordinary heroism and divine intervention. Thanatos’s relationship with Hades, the god of the Underworld, is often misunderstood. Thanatos is not the ruler of the dead, nor does he oversee punishment or reward.
