@mastersparalegalservices: Why I would never move into a rental unit in Ontario that says “tenant to pay 1/3 of utilities” #landlord #tenant #LTB #rentalproperty
Realistically places like this should be all included cause that’s just not fair

I toured a place. A single mom. The upstairs was 5 full grown adults. I said no thanks 🥰 I looked at their bills and it was well over 300 plus a MONTH and that didn’t include gas

i live in ontario & just wouldn’t move into anywhere that didn’t have utilities included in the first place. $950 for our two bedroom, all included, and we NEVER have to worry about what bills are gunna be. rent is always the same, phone bills are always the same, car insurance only ever goes down. it’ll be rough getting used to paying for utilities when we get our house, but at least it’s easy for now

Whenever I see “tenant pays % of utilities” I almost always ignore it completely sometimes if the place is nice enough I’ll see up a viewing and ask if I can just make it a flat rate instead but that’s it

bc the majority is just standard delivery fees? wouldnt it still be cheaper than paying your own individual bill? Jw bc my hydro for 2 levels is about $180 in winter... it feels like a stretch to go to $600... but also idk what other people in ontario are paying. maybe my hydro habits are accidentally saving me?

Doesn’t that fall under the housekeeper act of you don’t have control of your own utilities?

I use to rent out the main floor of my home and I lived in the basement. utilities included. 1 couple moved in and my utility bill jumped 500+ extra than usual. i thought something was wrong so i asked to come up and check things out. these ppl had a mini fridge in every room, deep freezer, lizards and snakes with many heat lamps and electric water fountains, fish tanks etc. my eyes were twitchin walking around seeing all this lol I was so relieved when they moved out at the end of the 2yr lease as I only charged 800 for the whole place.

I lived in a house where it was me alone upstairs and my landlord and his wife downstairs and I paid 1/3 of the water but I had my own utilities (electric, gas, internet, tv) otherwise and I never gave it a second thought….. he always gave me a copy of the bill. And even though he had a garden which took some water, they always gave me fruits and veg from it.

I lived in a basement suite with one other person in like 600 square feet and we payed 1/3 utilities, but there were 7 people living upstairs, 3 floors at least 2500 square feet, 3.5 baths. It was insane!

in Australia it's actually illegal to make tenants pay utilities unless they're individually metered

split utilities with other tenants in a rental ad is an automatic pass

The only ethical way to rent these places is to include utilities in the rent. I never looked at these places when searching for rentals.

Damn 65° is a very HOT temp to have in the summer! We are talking about Celsius, right? Since we’re talking about Canada, and Ontario, right?

I agree, didn’t think of that when I moved in, it is just my 7 year old and I, yet there are 3 people in one of the upstairs tenants has 3 people living there now and the other upstairs neighbour has at least 5 people living there now, I am paying for their water and hydro usage. My landlord was also sending me a bill for enercare instead of the gas bill, I made sure that stopped

Single mom who was barely home and we had to pay the 2/3 of the utilities and we went from 60 bills in a town house to 250 dollar bills 😳 the basement tenant was likely crypto mining based on the equipment we could see through the windows. And a bunch of other stuff. It was horrible and frustrating and he had the breaker box and refused to turn off the electric baseboards in the summer like the company suggested because “he’s an electrical engineer and they dont draw power when they aren’t heating” well then why does every electrical company suggested turning the breaker off and why did it make a significant difference in every house I’ve ever lived in 😐
