@captmarkkelly: Twenty-three years ago today, seven astronauts never made it home when we lost space shuttle Columbia. It was a tragedy that changed space exploration and reminded us of its incredible risks. I think about their families every Feb. 1st. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I was handing my kids off to a family member, stationed at Ft Hood and preparing to deploy. When GUIDO lost coms on CNN I went into my back yard band watching Columbia break apart while streaking across the Texas sky.

I was sick and up all that night. had the news on. they were awaiting the shuttle landing in the morning. I thought it would be cool to watch. then no one knew why it wasn't showing up.. then the debris started to fall...

and i remember Columbia. The engineers knew the heat shield was compromised and telescopes could have confirmed it. I know where i was on that date and the date Challenger exploded. It was °F 27, and morton thiakol said no go. They made the O rings.
