As a disaffected American paramedic turned PA, married to an ICU RN who moved to New Zealand, it does not have to be this way. And joking about it normalizes the abuse nurses experience in the system. Nurses are the backbone of healthcare and without them, everything comes to a screeching halt. Use this to organize and advocate for yourselves and your patients. NZ is a tiny country with a fraction of the $ the US has, a fraction of the resources and all ICU ratios are 1:1 and sometimes 2 RNs:1 pt (peds, CRRT, heavy cases) throughout the country. Use your platform, which was made to educate nurses, to demand a better system cuz babe, no one is coming to save ya.
