September 15, 1969: The Jimi Hendrix Experience Released “Stone Free” On September 15, 1969, Reprise Records released “Stone Free” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience as a single in the United States, with “If 6 Was 9” on the B-side. The song had a history stretching back to the very beginning of the Experience. Hendrix wrote “Stone Free” soon after moving to London in 1966, and it became one of the first original songs he recorded with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. In Britain, it had originally appeared as the B-side of the band's debut single, “Hey Joe.” By 1969, however, Hendrix was interested in revisiting it. In April he recorded a new version at the Record Plant in New York, later adding guitar and vocal overdubs. Roger Chapman of Family and Andy Fairweather Low of Amen Corner contributed backing vocals to the remake. Despite all that work, Reprise chose the original 1966 recording when “Stone Free” finally received its American single release. The timing made the record unusual. The original Jimi Hendrix Experience had effectively come to an end during the summer of 1969, and Hendrix was already moving toward different musicians and new musical ideas. Yet Reprise was issuing one of the earliest Experience recordings as a new American single. “Stone Free” didn't reach the Billboard Hot 100, although it appeared on the Bubbling Under chart. Commercial performance aside, the song remained important to Hendrix, who continued performing it live and often transformed the compact studio recording into an extended vehicle for improvisation.
