@financial_craic: With the @europeanmotorshow in town, maybe it's time to change lanes and look at a rule of thumb for car affordability. The 20/4/10 rule suggests a minimumof 20%|deposit; maximum of 4 year loan and no more than 10% of gross salary to cover all expenses including the loan, insurance, car tax, fuel and maintenance. Do you think this is a realistic formula? #ireland #craic #PersonalFinance
if you have to borrow, you can't afford it, that's the, zero down, zero payment, zero stress rule. try it 👌

Anyone spending 35k on a car and paying 7% interest is making bad financial decisions

Buy an aul diesel that’s been well looked after that you can pay outright. Look after it. Keep a grand or two aside for any works. Job done. Over 300,000km on mine now. 50,000km a year since I bought it 4 years ago

why would you take 12.5% of your gross salary, it should be your net salary.

Good logic, but for a lot of people it’s not a realistic rule to live by in Ireland with our mental car costs, unless they are very high earners... Especially for families who need a larger, modern safe dependable car

considering they are deprecating assets, what fo you think about leasing? I know literally nothing about it, so I don't know if it's more expensive

I live in the North. 88 grand would be quite the salary up here. What's the median salary in the South?

I must be a cheapskate. Earn that. Would never spend more than €10-€15k on a car.

So how have so many suvs above 70000€ ?. Likes of say the Kia ev9. Or as I seen recently a new 250000€ Porsche GT4 RS. Or the Range Rovers that are very plentiful.

11k a year is mental money on a depreciating item … pay that 11k a year off your mortgage and see the difference
