I really like Klemans for this archetype, they are a French work shoe company. Look similar to Paraboot Micheals but at a lower price point.

As a a lover of leather shoes, my eternal concern with derbies is that while they are so universal, they are also 9/10 sooo narrow. I’ve accepted that boots are just my silhouette lol

My only complaint with derby’s are they look a little bit plain. You could argue that makes them more versatile but I always go for some broguing just for some visual interest.

I'd urge ppl not to buy from fashion brands, sadly church's and tricker's now fall into this category. USA brand like alden is quite good, but the ultimate in rtw is UK based crockett&jones. the next level of leather shoes comes in the material itself. not all leather is tanned equally as well. one of the most famous tanneries in the world is right in Chicago, IL. They also tan the pig skin for the NFL. But that part is for later. right?
