@emily.the.recruiter: Here’s exactly how I would suggest answering the question. What are your salary expectations in an interview… #careercoach #jobsearch
So if a starting salary listed on a job is 92 and the max is 102, do I say 102?

My favourite response to this was in a recent phone pre-interview. I told them my expectation, they asked if I was willing to negotiate. I said ‘yes absolutely, I’d love to negotiate a higher salary!’

10+ years in recruiting and HR, not answering, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment in the end and not a good spot for negotiation. Transparency in the first convo is key to set your expectations, allow them to see if they can make it happen and ultimately save you time and get you an offer that you’re happy with.

Literally trained my husband to ask “well it depends, what’s your budget for this position? Followed with, based on my current position I’d like to meet at xyz” and 9/10 times he gets paid more:)

I respond “What is your budget range for the open position?” And if I like the number, I reiterate that the max range $ they stated is the salary I require, minimum. What are they gonna do, low ball you after they stated that they have the budget you want? Lol

The problem is, you have to answer that question when you submit your data on the website with your resume… so.. not an option really

I usually tell them what the industry standard range is. Then say I am willing to negotiate within those parameters. This question is more of a test to see if you did your homework before the interview.

My response is always, “I need to hear all of the responsibilities of the position before I let you know how much I expect to be compensated.“
