Like no he did not make it an all boys cast cause female character where uncommon at the time he did that because girls aren’t the ones taught to be violently evil like the boys he taught were

Coricomile :
Removing the context of the boys being fresh out of WW2, raised in the Cold War, and under threat of nuclear war for "human bad" does such a disservice to the story being told. These are little boys aping their absent fathers that went to war and what that means to them.

I hate Lord of the flies. But I love that he wrote it because he was a teacher.

I recently saw a person comment "we have raised the lord of the flies and I am here for it," in support of a video depicting youth-activists at a protest. I hope this series will help people understand that is not a compliment

they made those children into the monster that is britan but in the absence of victims the monster consumed itself

The modern discourse surrounding this work makes my head spin. “Errmm, what about the Tongan castaways?” What about them?! Do you believe Lord of the Flies was only incidentally about British boarding school students?!

I think a majority of schools when teaching this book say it’s about humanity’s evil. I don’t get why when this makes so much more sense

This is always how I read this in school. A critique of white British superiority and colonialist ideals. The children are just reproducing what they’ve been taught at home on the island.

Lord of the flies reminds me of the crabs in a bucket thing. crabs grab each other ensuring no one escapes but this problem doesnt exist in nature.

my dad was sent to a british boarding school as a kid. he was one of the few non-white students there. whenever he recounts an experience im like sir that is a human rights violation

I remember in my high school English class after we read the book we had to write an essay on whether humanity is evil or not.

This point is especially shown when the military man appears at the end to save them and is depicted as being the same as the boys with the backdrop of the war going on. I think though the reason why people think LotF is a statement of humanity is because it’s often taught that way in high school lit classes

Another thing to note is that they only descended into madness after the pilot crash lands and they get scared.

I said this myself in a high school essay, and a recent video essay. that's why the 1990 movie failed for me, because it neglected to specifically condemn patriarchal military culture (and whitewashed Simon)

to think that this "parody" survived and all the other books with that trope are just history by now.
