Glass squids are creatures that seem to float effortlessly through the ocean. Their nearly transparent bodies help them blend into the surrounding water and avoid predators. Inside their bodies is a light chemical compound that allows them to stay suspended without sinking or rising. This balance lets them travel with ocean currents while saving energy. Glass squids live in mid to deep waters across the world’s oceans, where light is limited. They feed on small drifting organisms they encounter along the way. Although they are widespread, they are rarely seen because of their transparency.
