midwest here, neg temps overnight for weeks. Plenty of feed with extra fats and protein, fresh unfrozen water, shelter from the wind. I do nothing extra. that being said, I do have breeds that are better able to handle cold weather (short combs, small wattles = no frostbite). their feathers are incredibly insulating.

In Maine. I keep a water warmer for the waterer and a thick layer of bedding that I fluff and sift periodically. (not hay. That gets to heavy and frozen). Wrap the run in plastic for wind preventing. That’s it. We Even maintain a high egg production.

@Jewel Smith:Canada here. We've had as cold as -30°C here and have no problems. As long as the coop is properly built it isn't an issue.

I'm in michigan they have a heated waterer and the heat pad broke. I don't scoop much poop in winter is creates natural heat too. eggs will freeze if you don't get them quick enough though. it's been -14 at the lowest so far

In the Midwest when it's -30 windchill anyway anytime during the winter, but that's me I bring them inside and wooden human baby pants with their food and water and a fire pit 36 x 36 great on top of them and three chickens in each one and no longer do bedding since you're in the house I don't want dust. I do big rugs and then I just shake the rugs out every few days or wash the rugs and it's worked out best and I don't have to worry when it's horrible cold cause they just sit around on golf balls or they just sit around and eat apples and look at me.

If your hands are cold, go tuck them under a chicken wing. They will be warm in seconds.
