I hate it. I’m still going to tip (when appropriate) because I want my server to make money for their efforts, but how do we change it?

it does suck, as a server and as someone who goes out to eat. it sucks. but don’t punish your wait staff who depend on that income for bills and livelihood. if you still want to enjoy food, do togo, togo gets paid $14-16 hourly depending where you live. The only thing putting me through school right now is serving and the tips i make. if you do not want to tip or even tip less, let your waitstaff know beforehand.

No offense, but we in Europe pay waiters and waitresses fair wages, as they should, and yes, we tip between 10-15%, and if we are satisfied with the service we tip more. We are not obligated, but we do it as a thank you for the service, not as an obligation.

in Europe we expect our employers to pay a livable wage. we don't expect our costumers to do that. went out to eat with 5 ppl last week. the bin was around 171€ the top was 4€. I told them to round it up to 175€. that's a normal tip in Belgium. it's not mandatory nor expected.

In Portugal, everyone will be happy if you tip 2€ whatever the related costs 😅

I’m was so confused when I traveled overseas in the past. The way we tip is an insult elsewhere. Get cookbooks & learn your fav dishes.

Their employers pay them a living wage, while American companies don’t.

Also the usual practice in Europe is that our tips, which are not needed by the servers to make a wage, are pooled and split between all the staff.

As a European, tipping spoiled my family holiday in the states. Like you travel with 1 extra person all the time financially

Tipping in Portugal is optional, and the amount, if given, is decided by the host. 😏

In Switzerland 🇨🇭servers are paid decently and tips are not required. But the service is good so we tip with pleasure. They are happy and we are happy 👏

servers/bartenders earn $3-5 per hour, so tips are essential, and when you excel in customer service you do earn (get tipped well) more. I do think you'd loose those workers if they only made minimum wage bc that certainly isnt enough to live off of.

How come it’s always the waiters tips we talk about? What about valets, hotel staff, cleaning, hairdressers and the list goes on and on….
