A man who repeatedly dropped a stone slab on a rough sleeper’s head has been convicted of his murder for a second time. Sergio Lemori repeatedly dropped the heavy object onto Andrew O’Connell – who was unknown to him – as he was sleeping in Royal Pavilion Gardens in Brighton shortly before midnight in August 2018. Lemori was later sentenced to life imprisonment, but after serving more than six years he successfully appealed his conviction on the basis of diminished responsibility. The case was re-heard at Hove Crown Court on 27 July and Lemori was again convicted on 6 August. On 11 August he was re-sentenced to life imprisonment. Mr O’Connell was found at 7.10am the morning after the attack and despite being taken to hospital, died two days later. He was 54. Mr O’Connell lived in Chatham, Kent, but was known to voluntarily sleep out in the open on occasions. Following Lemori’s sentencing, Mr O’Connell’s family released a statement saying: “Today, we remember not the person who caused so much pain, but the person whose life mattered beyond measure.” The family said that justice has “once again spoken” but while pleased with the outcome, it can’t “undo the loss or erase the suffering, it reaffirms what we have always known—that Andy deserved justice, dignity, and to have his voice heard”. The family added: “We honour a life that was taken far too soon, a life that touched so many people with love, kindness, and memories that will never fade. His absence is felt every day, but so too is his lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.” Detective Inspector Debbie Birch, of the Major Crime Team, said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a vulnerable and defenceless man who was unknown to Lemori, and who was simply minding his own business as he slept in Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Gardens that night, having been given prior permission to sleep there.” #5News #roughsleeper #homeless
