That extra piece would be for mounting the pipe to a wall or chimney so it can't move.

Honestly, it looks like a chimney pipe hanger one side screws to your house the other side screws and holds the chimney on with clamps what it looks like to me anyway

It’s not too tall. It’s too short. You need a hole in your roof so you can properly vent it.

I would its the tool like a poker....to move the wood/kindling around.....pull it push it and hold the little end that has a hole in the rod helps the part you hold not get hot. I would say it's the tool to do that.
