One argument against your proposal of it being a period piece set in the 1990s. I think it would be so much funnier if he wrecked his car and his phone broke and the small town is so behind the times they only have landline and he doesn’t have a single phone number memorized.

one could argue that the whole movie being predicated on mcqueen falling asleep in the trailer and being accidentally released onto the highway and left behind is unrealistic in a real-world setting, because why would he be sleeping in the car IN the trailer instead of like,,, sitting in the cab with mac. but i raise you: is that not the exact kind of overzealous arrogant shit a young hotshot racecar driver would want to do in the days leading up to the biggest race of his career? like is it unrealistic? maybe. is it TOTALLY IN LINE WITH LIGHTNING'S CHARACTER AT THE BEGINNING OF CARS 1? YOU BETCHA

Maybe there could be a side plot about some detectives trying to solve the case of the missing drivers. Maybe every few years, one nascar driver suddenly goes missing and no one knows why but it’s always when they cross a specific dirt road. If you wanted to make the story more mature, maybe McQueen has a substance abuse problem and an awful childhood trauma from his abusive father who used to work in NASCAR (that isn’t racing). I could see the story getting more and more chaotic throughout the runtime

do not watch Cars 2. if you do, it isn’t canon. and the only way I think it words is if you assume it's Mater telling Lightning about a dream he had. Cars 3 is the actual sequel.

You should watch Speed Racer (2008). It’s not live action “Cars,” but it is an absolutely bonkers racing movie about the power of friendship. Adapted from a cartoon but it kept the soul of a cartoon if that makes sense.
