@merideth_adhdeducation: Let’s talk about auditory processing disorder because a lot of people with ADHD struggle here and don’t realize it. Auditory processing difficulties are often mistaken for hearing loss, but they’re not the same thing. Your ears work just fine. The issue is that your brain has trouble organizing, interpreting, and turning sound into meaning, especially when there’s background noise, fast speech, or multiple voices. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone: • Words sound scrambled and your brain catches up a few seconds later • You miss parts of conversations in noisy restaurants • You rely on subtitles (even when the volume is up) • Group conversations feel overwhelming • Meetings leave you completely drained Here’s where ADHD comes in. ADHD affects attention regulation, working memory, and processing speed, the exact skills your brain needs to decode speech in real time. Many people with ADHD don’t have a formal auditory processing disorder diagnosis, but they still experience very real auditory processing difficulties. Your brain is trying to listen, filter noise, hold information, interpret meaning, and respond, all at once. When executive function is overloaded, something gives. That’s why people with ADHD are often told they “aren’t listening,” when in reality they’re working twice as hard just to keep up. What helps: • Asking people to repeat or slow down • Written follow-ups after verbal instructions • Quieter work environments • Noise-canceling headphones • And self-compassion—because sometimes you just need more time My name is Merideth. There is no in between. Either I know what you are going to say before you finish speaking or I have no idea what you are saying until you start to repeat yourself. Then I’ll finish your sentence.

Do other people often say “what?” while you’re processing what someone says and then you respond to it right as they start repeating it?

I didn’t know I had ADHD, went for a hearing test, was told I had an Auditory Processing Disorder - totally eye opening! Then got the ADHD diagnosis…it explained so much about me that I thought were “quirks”.

So I went through 9 months of various appointments and testing at the behest of my therapist. It was honestly probably only 3-4 actual appointments. They diagnosed me with an auditory processing disorder, anxiety (I do not feel like this is valid) and “extraordinary intelligence” 🙄 but did not feel like ADD was an appropriate dx for me. This left me more frustrated and hopeless feeling than when I began seeking help. I feel like being a woman in her mid 50s is causing some discrimination. As if it’s not possible that I’m only just now getting the help I need. I live in a small town. I’m afraid if I go to another doctor I’ll be viewed at a “drug seeker”.

This is me. I had my hearing tested. I told the audiologist, I think I have a hearing disorder. She said, I do. My hearing is fine. I asked her what I could do. She replied: read out loud to yourself. It does something to the brain and helps.

I also think my ADHD makes me think more about how I am going to respond and not actually listen to what the person is saying to me.

I can hear just fine. But I'm curious if those glasses frames would look good on me too? Never understand why everyone lives Pellegrino - it's just fizzy water, right? I wonder if those bricks are actually old, or just made to look that way? Love that blazer, but oatmeal colored clothing makes me look washed out. That painting would look amazing in my dining room. What was the question? Can you repeat that? ☺

I wish humans had subtitles! I struggle so much with this especially with background noise.

This is totally me. It’s like I hear part of what someone says but not the whole thing. My husband gets mad because he says you just don’t listen to me. I try to tell him it’s my adhd but he says I use that as an excuse. I say it’s not an excuse it’s what’s happening.

I have so much trouble focusing when people are talking. I have to remind myself to focus and to also ask questions about themselves and not just talk about me.

I work with a lot of people who speak english as a 2nd language and have pretty strong accents, meetings and such can be pretty difficult. I feel pretty fortunate that MS Teams has built in transcription to give me subtitles
