Use drywall shims and glue gun and stencil the walls than trace them out and cut it with a jig saw. I can do a soap dish wall stencil, cut and glue in maybe 15 minutes with not even having to test fit it a single time always fit nice and snug especially for uneven walls. Less gaps to silicone the better.

Why not trowel on the adhesive like they do for tile and can you use a different substrate that is used for tile?
