🚨 For the first time in more than 200 years, a woman on Tennessee’s death row was taken into the execution chamber and actually given the lethal injection Wednesday night. Her name is Christa Pike. But there was one major problem: the drugs didn’t kill her. According to reports, Pike received the initial dose of pentobarbital and later a backup dose — and survived. She was ultimately transported from the prison to a hospital, where her attorney says she remains alive and is receiving medical care. Pike was sentenced to death for the horrific 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18 when she, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and Shadolla Peterson took Colleen to an isolated wooded area in Knoxville. Colleen was subjected to a prolonged attack in which she was beaten and repeatedly cut before suffering fatal blunt-force injuries to her head. Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy and sentenced to death in 1996. What happened Wednesday night, however, has created an entirely separate controversy. Other prisoners have survived attempted executions when officials were unable to establish IV access and therefore never administered the lethal drugs. But the Death Penalty Information Center told the Associated Press it was unaware of another modern U.S. case in which someone remained alive after the execution drugs were actually administered. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has since ordered an independent review and paused the state’s remaining scheduled execution this year. None of this should allow Colleen Slemmer to disappear from the conversation. She was only 19 years old, and nothing about the circumstances surrounding Pike’s execution changes what was taken from her. But what happened inside that execution chamber raises serious questions that Tennessee will now have to answer: How did a condemned prisoner receive the execution drugs — including a backup dose — and survive? #ChristaPike #ColleenSlemmer #DeathPenalty #TrueCrime #breakingnews
