A man being hunted by police hid under a bed when officers knocked down his door, after he hit three people with his car and failed to stop. Bodycam footage shows Joseph Wicks cowing beneath the slats of a bed as an officer points a taser at him. Wicks, 27, hit three people with a car in the early hours of 30 November last year while speeding recklessly around Colchester in a Fiat 500. He mounted the pavement and struck pedestrians outside a nightclub in Queen Street. None of the victims were seriously injured. Wicks fled the scene and abandoned the car, but officers recovered his fingerprints from inside the vehicle. Earlier the day, Wicks had already been identified as driving aggressively down narrow roads and around the city centre, heading the wrong way along one-way streets, narrowly missing members of the public, and ignoring red lights. Wicks was also wanted for other crimes, including a campaign of stalking which culminated in an incident on 8 May this year. He attended the victim’s address, “shouting, swearing and acting aggressively, banging on the front door and demanding entry” before returning to his van, Essex Police said. When a man approached the parked vehicle and opened the passenger door to speak to Wicks, “he reported seeing a metal baseball bat and what appeared to be a handgun”. Wicks left the area but continued to bombard the woman with phone calls and messages. Essex Police said due to the report of a potential firearm, specially trained armed officers began enquiries at several addresses linked to Wicks and the following day, found his van, and recovered a bat. The firearm was not found. Armed officers then executed a warrant at an address in Colchester on 11 May and found “multiple people inside the property, all of whom denied having seen Wicks”. “However, after carrying out a thorough search, officers uncovered him hiding underneath an Ottoman bed,” Essex Police said. Wicks was arrested and charged with a number of offences, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police. He was also charged with three counts of assault by beating, three counts of attempting to cause actual bodily harm, stalking, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, sending threatening communications, and criminal damage. Wicks admitted all of the charges except the imitation firearm offence, which he denied. That charge was left to lie on file by prosecutors. On 31 July, Wicks was jailed for four years and six months and further disqualified from driving for two years and six months.
