Pokhara is only about 25 kilometers from the Annapurna range, yet it lies at just 800 meters above sea level, making it one of the steepest elevation transitions on the planet in such a short distance. Because of this extreme contrast, Pokhara records some of the heaviest rainfall in Nepal, often over 3,500 mm per year, as warm air from the plains crashes directly into the Himalayas. Beneath the city is a huge network of limestone caves and underground rivers, including the Seti River, which mysteriously disappears into deep gorges and reappears in different places. The famous Phewa Lake in the foreground was actually formed by natural damming from landslides centuries ago, not by glaciers like many Himalayan lakes. And on very clear mornings, from Pokhara you can see Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I rising more than 7 vertical kilometers above you, one of the greatest visible height differences anywhere on Earth.
