Shouldn't the underlying fear be the dread of realising that an animal is in fact an animal, and regardless of how you may try to domesticate it, there will always be the fear of loss of control? I think Primate maybe does it badly, but the entirety of NOPE rests on this premise, right?

Tbh the thing I didn't like about this film was the rabies plot. I think it's much scarier if the chimp just went nuts because that's what they do sometimes! And it's our own hubris and habit of projecting our emotions/expectations onto animals that makes people blind to the danger. I don't know. I definitely feel like people having a chimp in 2025 seems pretty unrealistic. They could've set it back 30 years and no one would have a smart phone and it wouldn't be the same "I need to run to get my phone" plotpoint again and again (also find it very hard to believe Gen Z/Alpha(?) kids wouldn't be carrying their phones downstairs to investigate disturbances).
