@tilscience: I thought I knew everything there was to know about Pompeii and wow was I wrong. The WIND?!! Study I referenced: Paone, Angelo. “The 79 AD Eruption of Somma: The Relationship between the Date of the Eruption and the Southeast Tephra Dispersion.” Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2008. #pompeii #archaeology #ancienthistory #romanempire
I loved Pompeii but also had a better time in Herculaneum

I love that our understanding of human history is mostly just what some guy said thousands of years ago

It's crazy that Rome didn't chronicle this event better. They kept records of everything.

Imagine going to get their version of a Big Mac and then a volcano just explodes. Wild to think about in general

Serious question.
Why do you guys in usa say "fifteen hundred"....
we have names for those numbers.
at what point do you decide to switch from randomness to using thousands ?

i was shocked at how massive the city was when i was there. the fact that the excavation is ongoing with (i believe) more than 25% of the city still covered in ash is also insane, who knows what other kind of things they’ll find there during our lifetime

Pompeii at the time also had some of the most varied diets in history since then (apart from now). They found an enormous variety of foods.
Also, how is it possible that no one wrote down the name of the place?

The eruption changed the geography so drastically! Those poles are the old dock where they’d tie up boats… Now the sea is miles away from Pompeii.

Our guide, who was someone from the museum of Naples, told us that Pompeii was never lost or totally buried. It was Herculaneum that was entirely buried and lost. 5 m of ash land landed on Pompeii, but it was never totally buried.
