I get what you’re saying 100% but Joe Jackson had a very striking face and there’s something to be sad about casting conventionally attractive people to play these characters. That is how he looked and if this helped him get more of the character, I don’t see what the issue is.

Theatre is different One of my all time favorite theater performances was Billy Dee Williams as Martin Luther King. He looked nothing like him but he brought his own style to the portrayal. However in film with closeups and time for the audience to study and compare

The make up, in this case, was absolutely necessary, because the colorism was a big part of Michael’s arc.

Making something out of nothing and always complaining. 🤦🏾♀️They made him look like Joe for a reason. Yes, it was necessary. Joseph had a very intimidating look, and that helps show a more realistic portrayal of him projecting his anger onto his kids and them being afraid from the sight of him. There’s nothing wrong with making the actor resemble the actual person.

i just don’t understand this complaint. Why are we questioning them making the actors look like the people they’re portraying in a biopic?… Like just say that out loud bro. Cant please everyone i guess

The prosthetics were so unnecessary! American Dream didn’t have to do it and it still stands. I personally feel that some makeup is done to replace the acting. Also didn’t we cancel Zoe for doing this….

Yes! No prosthetics works well when the actor is less known and brand new. I would see Coleman vs seeing Joe. Angela was also younger and up and coming when she played Tina.

I just love the question that you’ve presented and I’ve read some interesting thoughts on this at first I didn’t think the makeup was necessary but now I get the necessity

Idris Elba played Nelson Mandela in a movie and he looks nothing like Mandela but he was so great by the end of the movie I forgot about that and just saw Mandela on screen.

So I think the makeup looks good, but I will say, I HOPE the movie (and Coleman’s performance) gives some nuance to Joe as a person. There’s A LOT that can be said about Joe Jackson, but there’s also nuance and context that I believe is required in telling the truth about their story as a black family from Gary, IN. That’s all imma say. Lol.

To answer your question, “can we suspend disbelief?” I’d say, collectively as an audience, no. There’s so much discourse around Jafar Jackson not looking 100% identical to Michael Jackson, even though he’s arguably 90% there. I agree with you, tho: it isn’t about being an impersonator, it’s about capturing the aura.
There are two Steve Jobs films that prove this point. The one with the stronger actor, Michael Fassbender, is a far better film and performance than the one with the closer physical resemblance, Ashton Kutcher.
