@ludacrispin: On January 3, my fiancé, Omar Padilla Vélez, and I were attacked by a gang in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was shot multiple times. Omar was killed. We were not in an area known to be dangerous. For reasons we don’t know, the initial police unit assigned to the case never even investigated it. It wasn’t until five days later, when the case fell on the homicide detective’s desk that they began to investigate it. Worse yet, is that when given the opportunity to speak to the media, no one stepped up for fear of retaliation by the gang. Obviously, at the time, neither of these things were our priorities as my fiancé was fighting a losing battle for his life in the hospital. We’ve now been told multiple times that due to the lack of any media coverage and the slow investigative response that the chances of anything coming out of this case are slim to none. I’m trying to be realistic… I know that the chances of a homicide conviction are close to zero, but I refuse to let my fiancé die in vain. Unless something is done, this absolutely WILL happen to someone else. I can’t bring Omar back, but I can try to prevent anyone else from having to feel a pain like this. Omar was a proud Puerto Rican who came stateside to earn his PhD in chemistry from Cornell University. He was highly respected in his field, and absolutely adored by all who were lucky enough to call him a friend. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed by so many. Please let me know if anyone can help bring justice to his death. Edited to add: This was NOT in La Perla. This happened in the Calle Cerra area, a very popular spot with restaurants and bars. The incident itself occurred on Calle Blanca & Calle La Nueva Palma. @Wapa TV
