Black Brit here, I’m kinda late to this post but I can understand the confusion as our history is not the same as USA. First, not all of us are immigrants to the uk. the term “black Brit” came around when black Caribbean people were sent to the UK because after the war our Caribbean families helped rebuild the uk. I understand black Americans don’t really consider other black people as black but in the UK that is also our identity. When it comes to music, no black British people did not create drill, but we do have our own genre of music which is called grime and UK garage which isn’t really popular outside of UK ❤️

Both. There are blk Brit’s who’ve been in the UK for as long as BA have been in the US. You also have British-Jamaican, British-Nigerian who are 1st or 2nd generation.

On government/application forms in the UK there is a 'Black' category and you're asked to specify what type of black. Black/ Afro Caribbean, Black/African etc. Then there is the 'any other Black background' which I tick and then fill in Black American. You also don't have to say all the time, you can tick 'prefer not to say' for any diversity questions, especially when it comes to job applications.

Black brits is more stating your nationality. Under that you will fall under black carribean or black British. Black is used for anyone who is african descendants in the west.

British is a nationality e.g my dad is a Jamaican immigrant so a Jamaican by nationality however I was born in England so I’m British or a black British person with a Caribbean cultural background/ ethnicity

Its much easier to use race and a nationality to group people. People dont know off rip what ethnicity someone is, they group you based off where they were raised or where they live. This is why i say the term Black American has two meanings. One means ethnicity, the other means race+nationality. Im Haitian American, but if i visit the UK, i would be viewed as Black American, not because thats my ethnicity but because im simply a black man from America. Alot of people do not care about ethnicity like that

Personally I prefer to call myself Nigerian. A lot of us just say where our parents are from . The label “Black Brit” is just more of an official name used in media to describe black people in the UK

I completely agree with what you’re saying. But, if we are allowed to name ourselves they should too. But, to name themselves “Black Brits” just shows their jealousy. We should do what we do and joke them.

There are no Black Brits ! Those people you call Black Brits are mainly of African and Caribbean origin . The population is now overwhelming West African / Nigerian .
