Dude the redlining in Kalamazoo PISSES ME OFF! A year ago after living in Michigan/kalamazoo county for 12 years I thought about “wait why don’t people who live in Edison, Douglas and the north side?” And then I went down a rabbit hole for 8 hours on my day off when I was supposed to be cleaning because I was INVESTED… I went on a rant once my husband came home from work and he was so confused where this came from. And i literally said “I don’t know it was just a random thought I had and I HAD to know the answer” and now anytime anyone talked about those areas as if they are “bad” or “ghetto” I go on my rant about all the information I learned and how angry it makes me. My father in law (unfortunately a trumper🤮) asked me why I even cared because I’m Mexican and should be “worried about myself”… first I was born and raised in California I don’t really need to worry about myself ESPECIALLY when redlining and the hurt directed towards POC in those neighborhoods is more important to ME. I can care about whatever I want. I don’t have to focus on me if I don’t want to. Informing people of redlining has became such a big passion of mine since finding out about how this is YEARS of suppressing people and it’s STILL happening!…… anyways my rant is over😅

Kalamazoo offers free college. Hopefully that helps the community one day.

To add to the conversation, when I was working in the real estate world I was told about all the multifamily homes around town. They built a bunch downtown and sold them to black families with the understanding that they could float the rent or make a passive income by renting out the other units. Then they zoned those homes so that you could not rent them out. This bankrupted a lot of black families or forced them to have family or friends come live with them just to afford the rent.

There are websites that show historical mapping of Kzoo! Many of the maps marked areas as undesirable based on proximity to business, school district, type of home, and most largely race. I live in the historic south st district and despite being blocks from downtown and having a good school district, the area was still deemed “undesirable” due to the racism. Also many of our one way streets are a remnant of racial infrastructure aimed at getting white people in and out for business without having to interact with black businesses. Thanks for bringing attention to this!

The stigma and racism regarding the Northside, Douglas, and Stuart neighborhoods are incredibly pervasive and counterproductive to revitalizing these neighborhoods. I worry about the event center and the potential to displace families at the cost of development. I am pro event center, but we need to protect our neighbors!!

KZoo born and raised. My grandparents owned their homes..N Burdick, N Edwards, Krom .My uncle owned The North Pole, my Dad worked their too. My Mom is in her 70s so I've heard the history. There used to be a bank on N Burdick decades ago, I'd go with a note for my Granny

I worked at a counseling center in the area and they wouldn't allow me to do any outreach/marketing/advertising in that area. when I asked why they said, "it's a Medicaid market" I was disgusted because I knew what they meant. ended up walking out soon after

This is a perfect example of how systematic racism works. It affects people for generations in multiple different ways on multiple different fronts. Great reporting.

Aya! Thank you for talking about this, the white flight in this town is so apparent once you look around. Esp the way funds are allocated to profitable neighborhoods like the vine but warn of the “dangerous and ghetto” northside and Edison. 💓

I love Kalamazoo and lived in the student ghetto, in the vine district on oak street. I’m saddened to hear this, but very impressed by your knowledge and I appreciate learning about the city I love, but also saddened…

Great job. Very interesting information. I wish the best for these families. I imagine a lot of people are being approached to sell for these downtown developments.
