Ignoring African history while only uplifting recent Black American figures is historical erasure. Africans endured generations of violence, resistance, and survival that made the diaspora possible. Black History Month may have started in the U.S., but Black history starts in Africa and extends through Caribbean, Afro-Latino, and Black American excellence (and great activists acknowledge that).
