@yovodo: someone asked me a while ago about my wrist brace — I wanted to be able test out whichever I end up recommending since my original one I brought from back home in China lol #wristbrace #assistivetechnology #carpaltunnel

I gave myself bilateral carpal tunnel sewing masks in 2020, I wish I could tell every hypermobile crafty person to wear ones like this now so they don't have to wear the ones with big hunks of metal in them that I needed to recover 😭

it is a good idea to know what kind of hypermobility you have as you may need to take even further precautions

I have hEDS and was "fine" until 27 and I gotta say - get a pt who knows how to deal with hypermobility asap. I put off diagnosis and tried to diy treament for years. there WILL come a time when this crashes. it's not worth it. get on a routine before you have to fight for one. I cannot stress this enough. you have to relearn how to hold yourself and do everything, and having hands-on guidance cannot be replicated with research.

I gave up on a formal diagnosis when I, a) saw the price for seeing a geneticist 🙂, and b) understood that knowing doesn't provide a cure, its just a thing you live with and can only alleviate by strength building. but being told by my ortho doctor that im likely hypermobile was pretty validating after feeling all these problems all my life

pro tip: restrictive braces with metal in them are bad for hEDS unless you are actively healing an injury. You weaken the only thing holding your wrists in place (your muscles) and increase your chances of injury.

As a hypermobile lab scientist, BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR NECK! Constantly looking down caused problems for me over time 😅

I relate a lot to this with how I felt a few years ago. I kept saying my “benign” joint hypermobility probably wasn’t full-blown EDS (and thought I may not get the hEDS diagnosis due to preexisting diagnosis of Sjogren’s) until my shoulders started going out in my sleep… I was already getting the same PT I would get for EDS, so I didn’t think I needed to seek the diagnosis until it started becoming debilitating which prompted me to get more serious about using the diagnosis to get insurance to cover prophylaxis or earlier interventions for related issues (this does take some persistence and doctors’ cooperation to appeal a lot of the time). The other argument for getting a diagnosis would be that if you were to need emergency surgery, the surgeon could use suture techniques that are less likely to tear out of hypermobile tissue, but you can also ask your providers to note that you may have fragile stretchy tissue in your chart to help guard against potential complications without seeking diagnosis at this time

After struggling with chronic joint pain my whole life with no answers, it took a new physical therapist one look at me to tell me that I’m hypermobile 😭 I’m a crocheter so this seems perfect for me! Thanks for sharing and I love your fits!

If and when you’re able I would recommend seeking a diagnosis. If you develop other health issues because of the hypermobility it can really speed up the diagnostic process. 💗

Just a warning. You may want to try to figure out what it is and soon. The reason is because it could be the reason you get sick as often as you do because some hypermobility issues are immunocompromisations on top of it. Be safe hun, and good luck.

As someone with hEDS, if you are able please get your hypermobility checked out by a doctor. EDS effects the whole body, can change how you react to medications, can change how surgeons operate on you, and with some subtype can have deadly complications. Use braces/compression garments on your own in the meantime if you want but get checked by a geneticist to make sure it's just your joints that are effected. 🦓❤️

As someone who went without diagnosis for YEARS and recently got diagnosed, I HIGHLY recommend physical therapy if possible. Assistive garments help, but it’s nowhere close to the affects of PT imo
