It’s a question of how much taxable income you have after you retire. If you’re relying on traditional 401Ks and IRA’s and you live in a state that taxes retirement income, then yes, you’re going to take a significant tax hit. If you switch over to Roth versions of those accounts and move to a state that doesn’t tax retirement income, then you don’t. It’s all in how you shape your income.

the numbers don't add up here. I understand what he did wrong, but if he owes only 100K on his house, his interest rate would have to be through the roof for there to be a $700 interest payment. additionally, Medicare IRMAA kicks in at somewhere around 110k. all he would have to do is pay off his house in a smaller increment over 2 years and he would be fine.

Take out a 401k loan to pay off the house and pay yourself the interest instead of the bank and avoid taxes on pulling the money out of 401k
