@oohmichael: I moved from England to Canada (Toronto) 9 months ago now, so here are some culture shocks that I have experienced so far! Whilst there are a lot of similarities between the countries, there are also a LOT of differences 😅 #cultureshock #uktocanada #britincanada #iecvisa #canada
Remember you're living in the second most expensive city in Canada. I am in Hamilton and have a very nice one bedroom apartment and I pay $800. That includes parking, heating and water. I also have a nice balcony.

The minimum wage in Ontario was supposed to to be higher but then people voted for Doug Ford and he kept it lower for longer.

Cost of living in the UK is comparable for ur wage. Also there is no tax on groceries in Canada. Plugs have GFIs in ur kitchen so they will turn off if the appliances overheat. Lastly ur in Toronto, cost of living high.

If you think Canadian minimum wage is low. you should realize that we do compete with the US a great deal and US federal minimum wage is stuck at $7.50 - with some states having "right to work", a practice where if you become unemployed you can turn up and the state will put you to work for tips

The niceness seems fake I think because we have a lot of 'polite formalities', like a dance of holding doors for each other and ensuring enough 'thank yous' are doled out.
But if they are not doled out ....pure Canadian rage 😡

As mentioned, you are definitely living in one of the most expensive Canadian cities. I would love to hear more of the differences and also, if you’re up for sharing, would you consider going to another area…what made you choose Toronto etc.

I have to disagree… salaries in England are extremely low comparatively, a friend of mine just moved there and in a comparable job to here she’s looking at earning $20-30k/yr less plus cost of living in London is WAY higher. Not to mention the price of petrol. Also speaking to family there utility costs in the UK are also much higher than here. I love the UK but I came back from my last trip with such an appreciation for what I have here!

Toronto and Vancouver are not indicative of all of canada. I live in edmonton, its really cheap here and wages are high. we have a million people on our city and lots to do.

My fiancé works for Honda on the production line building civics and he makes $95k a year with only highschool education, has 100% health and dental benefit coverage for our whole family, private company gym, we get to lease vehicles and our payments include maintenance and insurance and they’re just a payroll deduction for him. He gets 17 vacation days a year, 6 call in days, and two week long paid company shut downs a year. It’s all about what you choose to do here

Min wage is governed by province/territory, so in that way they do differ by cost of living.
