I am Chinese and I respect the fact that other cultures also celebrate Chinese new year. But I went to a new year event and saw “Vietnamese lion dance that Vietnamese celebrate their culture”, and I thought that’s wrong.

One kind correction. Lunar New Year is based on a purely lunar calendar, with its new year falling in June 2026, which follows the Islamic calendar system. The Chinese New Year is based on a lunisolar calendar. They are two completely different things ! If you want to celebrate lunar new year, celebrates on June! Call Chinese new year, Lunar new year insult Chinese and Islamic culture at the same time

It's not even fromunar Calendar. Chinese new year is determined using Chinese 'LuniSolar' calender. Chinese calendar is LuniSolar based on both moon's and Sun's movement.

But by defaulting to "Chinese" new year, aren't we also blurring the other Asian cultures that celebrate it in their own cultural way? I get that the calendar to celebrate this event originated from China, but it's not like we go and prefix everything with the country of origin. Culture spreads, gets adopted and adapts to different culture. Let's acknowledge that it had Chinese origin but not blatantly label the whole thing as Chinese when other countries have their own unique celebration for it as well.
