@iamcoachleroy: Dont make this mistake… “If my sport doesn’t use overhead movement, I don’t need overhead strength.” That logic sounds ok… but if this is the way you thinking you’re just trying to copy your sport in the gym. Overhead training isn’t about learning to press like a weightlifter.
It’s how you build more postural endurance, trunk stiffness, and shoulder integrity, super important when your body is under load and your nervous system is already fried. Watch fighters late in rounds, it’s almost never leg strength that fails first.
It’s posture, the ribs flare, the head comes forward, the shoulders dump, breathing gets shallow, and they lose power everywhere. Overhead presses, carries, holds, and controlled + dynamic movements force the body to stay stacked when it wants to collapse.
These movement expose weak links in the shoulder - ribcage - pelvis connection that a movement like a push up could never expose. If a fighter can’t:
- maintain overhead position while walking
- control their trunk under load
- keep shoulder position as fatigue builds It shows me they going to lose posture in clinches, exchanges, grappling, and even striking output. This is why we progress overhead work carefully:
• First for range of motion
• Then for control
• Then for endurance under movement NOT because fighting happens overhead… but because losing posture kills performance long before cardio does. Please stop trying to copy your sport in the gym, train the qualities that keep you dangerous and improve your overall capacity.
Still avoiding overhead work, this is your sign 👊🏼 And hey, if you want a fully structured plan to train real capacity, boosting performance tremendously, DM “CAMP” #performance #fighter #strengthandconditioning #muaythai #strength
