Client says: “Why are you charging this much?” Don’t start defending yourself. Don’t reduce your price. Do this instead. First, understand what the client is really asking. Sometimes “Why is it this expensive?” is not an attack on your price. They are trying to find out whether the money they are about to commit makes sense. Their brain is asking: “What exactly am I getting for this?” “What makes this worth this amount?” “Will I regret spending this money?” “Can I trust this person to deliver?” If you immediately start defending yourself, you can accidentally make the conversation about your price. You start saying: “I’m not expensive.” “My price is actually cheap.” “I have many years of experience.” “Other people charge more.” Now you are trying to prove that your price is acceptable instead of helping the client understand the value behind it. And when you reduce your price too quickly, you can create another problem. The client may think: “If you could reduce it this easily, maybe the first price was not really your price.” So what should you do? Shift the conversation from PRICE to WHAT THE PRICE COVERS. Instead of defending yourself, say: “I understand. Before we talk about changing the price, let me show you exactly what this covers and why it is priced that way.” Then explain the result, process, attention, convenience, expertise, support, quality, or outcome they are paying for. For example, imagine a business owner who charges ₦150,000 for a service. A potential client says: “Why ₦150,000? That’s too much.” Instead of immediately saying, “I can do ₦120,000,” the business owner explains what the client receives, what problem it solves, what is involved, and what happens after the service is delivered. The client now has something to judge. That changes the conversation. You are no longer asking them to simply accept your number. You are helping them understand the reason behind it. Here is the important lesson: When a client questions your price, don’t rush to prove that you are cheap. Help them understand what they are actually paying for. And if they still cannot afford it after understanding the value, that is a budget issue, not automatically a pricing problem. Your next client conversation can change completely when you understand what people are really saying behind their words. The Client Code goes deeper into client psychology, communication, objections, trust, and the mistakes that quietly cost businesses opportunities. If you want to handle clients better and stop losing opportunities because of poor communication, check the link in my bio. #ClientCommunication #BusinessTips #ClientPsychology #SalesStrategy #TheClientCode
