what REALLY helped me (self taught) was tearing apart my own clothes. I started due to the need to alter all my clothes (I'm short & skinny), then I started deconstructing my clothes to alter them better. it helped me understand how everything was put together esp awkward things like darts etc. (if you don't want to destroy your own clothes, get 2nd hand)
