@romania: Can white feel heavy? From the summit of Peleaga Peak, winter is no color at all but a condition, an affliction of light and cold pressing down on the mountains. Snow piles upon snow until contours soften and the world becomes bleached, hushed, anesthetized. The view stretches outward in frozen layers, ridges dissolving into milky distance, everything swallowed by a pallor so complete it feels ecclesiastical. Here, snow does not decorate, it dominates. Drifts can rise taller than a man, sculpted by katabatic winds into hard, glassy dunes. Temperatures collapse well below minus twenty degrees Celsius, and frost feathers cling to rock like mineral plumage. The Retezat range, carved by ancient ice, reveals its glacial ancestry most clearly in winter, when valleys vanish under white plates and lakes like Bucura and Zănoaga lie entombed beneath meters of frozen silence. Sound dies quickly up here, absorbed by snowfields that behave like vast acoustic graves. Looking out over this monochrome immensity, thought slows, almost freezes. There is no drama in this cold, only endurance, only patience. The mountains seem less like landforms and more like weather made solid, existing in a long, indifferent pause.
