Danys thought in book 1 about making sure her son had bloodriders to protect him from treacherous kingsguard really puts into perspective of what you’re saying. Bloodriders go above and beyond in terms of loyalty to their khal, especially compared to the average kingsguard, also you count the number of truly loyal kingsguard who we know enough about to say they have never betrayed their vows, disobeyed their kings, swapped sides, etc on no hands. There’s not a single one who we know even a little about who’s never broken their vows, unless all we have is a name and like two trials they participated in they have broken their vows as kingsguard.

The Kingsguard in the story demonstrate the futility of vowing allegiance to the king, because half the Kings in the history of Westeros were not worthy of loyalty. Most kingsgaurd were bystanders for horrible people. A major point of the story is that the vows of a knight mean very little. The best 'Knights' in the story, Duncan and Brienne, are not technically Knights if I remember right. The whole point was knighthood was just a silly title
