@maisonrickie: Today, we break down travel as cultural experience vs escapism. We go over why trips like resorts and cruises are often looked down on and what different trips signal about you. Super interesting topic today. There will 100% be more videos touching on this topic! Hope you enjoy and leave your thoughts in the comments! 🙏🙏
“The ability to endure discomfort for aesthetic reasons becomes a class marker” OKAYYY!!!!

One thing you didn’t mention is that the one going to France likely has been multiple times. So there’s no hurry to see the big sights because you’ve seen them many times. Many ppl w money go to the same country repeatedly throughout the years.

This is part of a conversation that I have been having for a long time with friends. As an architect and urban planner I tend to be very harsh on resorts because they do not promote culture and local economy but you are giving me a new perspective to understand why someone would prefer this kind of traveling. You’ve made me more empathetic and understanding. Thank you.

I never got the attraction of all inclusive resorts. they are fake with bad food. you never get the vibe of that place, the real food, the normal interactions with real people. take a walk in a small city, stay in small hotels, this is the way that you can know a place.

I don’t think it’s class it’s personality. Some people just are not curious and can’t handle discomfort so it always all inclusive even if they could afford more

The line “you guys work so hard” in your anecdote is such a cut 👀 bc the speaker might not even understand why it sounds so harsh

I do think these are different types of travel but they can coexist. You can travel for a cultural experience 90% of the time but then just want an escapist beach vacay too. They're not mutually exclusive.

Not sure if it’s that black and white, there are places such as St. Tropez or Monaco which are the upper class’s playgrounds or escapes as opposed to cultural enrichment destinations. Perhaps I’m misinterpreting your definition of upper class and considering “nouveau riche” individuals to be part of the upper class.

One echelon above the niche countryside trip: going to a far flung destination simply to participate in an activity, that may even be accessible at home. Think: skiing in the Dolomites instead of skiing in upstate NY

My god I’m amazed at how well you articulated this. There’s a lot of conversation around ‘vacations’ vs. ‘real travel’ and it’s absolutely rooted in the economic and class reasons you mentioned. Amazing video!

If I were to pretend to be a 16th-century noble, that would have sounded like an insult.

I've traveled as a cultural experience, stayed at a chateau in Bordeaux and hired the local chef for a day (who served us rabbit with bits of fur still on!), but my work life was so stressful that it was still an escape. Where do I fall? 😄

I will say that the resorts are a part of neo colonialism, where corporations carve out a piece of a country, section it off, and use it for profit. This partition means that the locals don’t see those tourism dollars, as they mostly stay at the resort (think Sandals in Jamaica). I know that’s not the point you were making, but I felt the need to provide this viewpoint

it's the difference between flying coach NYC to London for a packaged holiday versus booking the Queen Mary 2 for a leisurely 8 days at sea listening to lectures, film, stage shows and ballroom dancing. Then heading off on the train to explore England.
