The reason German sounds pleasant is because it's related to English, and the ethnic composition of the population is also based on Saxon influences. In England, this is because Briton genetics decreased significantly during the Roman period; I don't know if it still exists today, but Saxons are found in England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg, and parts of Northern France.
