@koi.mood: The Louisiana Creoles After the first emergence of slaves in 1719, the Creole culture dominated Louisiana and continued to do so until the first waves of black migration in the 1840s. Since then the Creole, and more specifically the Creole of color (Gens de couleur), have fought to keep their language, traditions, and culture alive. With influences from Western Europeans, West Africans, and Native Americans, the Creole culture was in direct opposition with white, English speaking, Anglo-Saxon America at the time. There have been many attempts throughout time to erase the black people from Creole history but you can’t erase impact. From jazz and gumbo to hoodoo and Mardi Gras, there is no question that black people have left an indelible mark on Creole culture and Louisiana. Black culture isn’t a monolith. There are so many cultures and identities that make up black America. This BHM I wanted to learn more about the subgroups within Black America and the history behind them. Today is for the Lousiana Creoles. * this is all research based and we know the internet lies so if there’s any misinformation or context missing, I apologize in advance* #blackhistorymonth #soulaan #creoletiktok #History #blackculture

The second picture are creoles from Martinique or Guadeloupe, who are from the French-speaking Caribbean. The madras is a traditional pattern that was taken from India to the Caribbean during the Indentureship era and assimilated into most Caribbean islands' and countries' traditional attire. It's not a necessarily "creole" thing, because the English-speaking and Dutch-speaking Caribbean islands and countries all have our own version of madras as well (like in Jamaica, it is called 'bandana').
