I was metal detecting near Ardpatrick Point inn Scotland about a decade ago….it was just getting dark and I was on the shore line digging a find. I heard a whistle noise (more like a screech than a whistle but was way out in the channel. Anyway about 20 minutes later the tide was out more and I went round the shoreline about 300m or so and there was a standing stone and I saw what looked like a seal sitting by it. The noise was coming from it. For a second my brain thought it was an injured dog so I immediately started approaching. As I did the sound got really loud and weird. Gut feeling was saying run but I couldn’t not know what it was. As I approached more it wasn’t a dog but just a white small looking creature, I couldn’t recognise it at all. So as soon as I got a decent distance to see it I cleaned my glasses then immediately heard more noises out in the water, these were extremely high pitched…like sonar but almost painful to hear, they were almost half circling where I was as I could hear the sounds coming from a few locations in the water…..so I ditched. I literally ran like Forrest Gump up to the road, left my detector behind the lot…..bearing in mind this location is miles and miles from any town. Tarbert was the closest. I got back to the car like 2k away and I could still hear whistles down in the bay…..To this day the weirdest feeling about it was this. As I first approached the whistles sounded inviting. Same as when I left. However once near they became terrifying. Whole thing looking back on it seemed like an empathy/emotional trap. I know the above sounds crazy and to most it is. However I can’t deny what I saw and to be honest I don’t care if people believe not. The oceans are something we most definitely do not fully understand.

Switched off right at the start! there isn’t one Royal Marines Commando on this earth who would start by saying they served in the Royal Navy! They are in the the Royal Marines, yes it’s a branch of the RN but it’s not something they would ever say!!!

As a recreational diver, I loved this story. My dad and I had an ongoing banter around mermaids before he passed away. He insisted they were real and I insisted they weren’t.
