@meghannmcuniff: A former police officer whose career ended after a 15-year-old boy shot him and killed five others told a judge today he believes the teen should spend the rest of his life in prison. "I wanted to point out that this is what a 15 year old could do with minimal life experience and ability. I don't want to see what a grown adult that had decades of time to plan the next assaut. I am asking you to give him life without parole," Casey Clark told Judge Paul Ridgeway in Raleigh, North Carolina today (Wednesday, February 4). Clark was part of a manhunt for an armed gunman who murdered five people when he was shot in one of his knees on Oct. 13, 2022. Clark now sells real estate in Michigan, and he returned to Raleigh to testify in the sentencing hearing today of confessed shooter Austin Thompson. I'm not sure what the point of the brief cross-exam was, maybe to try to show Clark wasn’t as vulnerable as Thompson’s other victims such as Lynn Gardner who you can watch testify here @Meghann Cuniff. This hearing is extensive becuase the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that courts must consider "mitigating characteristics of youth" before imposing a life sentence on someone convicted of a homicide committed then they were under the age of 18. Many courts call such hearings "Miller hearings" in reference to the name of the SCOTUS case, Miller v. Alabama. Judge Ridgeway in North Carolina's 10th Judicial District will sentence Thompson after a hearing that's expected to last into next week. #law #crime #court #legal

Surely, the cross examination was to prevent the prosecution from making arguments about the officer making poor decisions under the influence of adrenaline which “training could have prevented” by verifying that there was already proper and extensive training measures put in place, therefore proving there was no error and that the officer had a very small likelihood of avoiding injury in the course of his duty outside of cowardice fleeing the scene

There is zero point and sending people life in jail unless a sentence would normally outlive their lifespan. If the goal is not to rehabilitate and send them back on the street, eventually we need to bring them out back old yeller style. prisons in America are an industry some prisons in Europe are a joke. But we need to focus on rehabilitation and not creating super criminal so I have nothing better to do to figure out how to get by in jail and work out. Bring back the military option.
