Ottawa City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to strip Donald Trump’s name from a residential street in the Canadian capital, amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada. Trump Avenue sits in the Central Park neighbourhood, where streets were named after New York City landmarks in the late 1990s, when Trump was known chiefly as a real estate developer. Nearby streets include Manhattan Crescent, Madison Park and Staten Way. The motion was brought by River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington on September 9. He said the street “would not meet any of the criteria had it gone through a formal commemorative naming process.” “I could speak at great length why I believe, strongly, it is time to rename ‘Trump Avenue,’ but I don’t want to give a platform anymore to the person who is on the current street sign blades,” Brockington said. Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe backed the move at a news conference afterward. “I don’t like the idea of anything that’s named for Donald Trump, who’s demonstrated hostility towards Canada,” he said. The decision follows Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and his order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. A 2021 attempt to rename the street failed after residents split 21-21 in a vote, with many citing the hassle of changing their address. Not everyone on the street is pleased. “We really don’t care about American politics... we would rather just keep it the way it is, not because we support Trump, but because it’s a huge hassle,” resident Dale Hammond said. Others, including neighbours Deanne Walters and Becca Sprague, said they welcomed the change. Brockington will now lead a community consultation to choose a replacement name, with final approval expected to return to council in 2027. The White House, through spokesperson Anna Kelly, pushed back on the decision.#today #BreakingNews #usa #google #world
