if we solve by substitution method, x+y=9 => x=y-9 2x+3y=22 2(9-y)+3y=22 18-2y+3y=22 then y=4 & x=5

The method you're using is very long. The use of the elimination method is shorter. Just multiply equation 1 by 2 and equation 2 by 1 to eliminate x. Then that gives: 2x+2y=18 and 2x+3y=22....
