@floriangadsby: Today’s mess, crimson store jars made from a blend of red and high-iron stoneware clay bodies. It’s ripping coarse and the first few pulls are always a little uncomfortable but once the wall are thin enough it’s just like throwing with normal clay I find, yet with the added bonus, (the grog), keeping the vessel very rigid and strong, it can be refreshing working with a stoneware that doesn’t fatigue as it’s used. I made twelve jars in total, 12 bodies, 12 lids, the 12 bodies first, with openings that are all identical in diameter, then I throw 12 lids measured to fit, the only difference being that in a few of these I’ll either more width or height, so I can pick choose from these ‘blanks’ to best fit the shapes of the bodies underneath. I find this really speeds up the process and helps me get into more of a rhythm, otherwise I’d constantly switching between body and lid, not really getting into the routine of either in quite the same way. Whilst grogged clay can be helpful during the throwing stage, it can make the clay brittle, which during the trimming step creates all kinds of other issues. More than that, highly grogged bodies just act differently, they dry differently, bend differently, take pressure exerted onto them differently, which all means I have to somewhat adjust my turning techniques as otherwise simply squashing the body portion or deforming it is a relatively easy thing to do. #stoneware #clay #maker #handmade #pottery
