Me, a Londoner, listening to my Russian friends & mum's calling 1 person by 5 different names like 😃 I was confused for a while until I learned all of them.

Would it be possible that he calls his brother by his full name, as a way to... "distance" himself? Treating him like a stranger, denying their relationship in a way? Since the brothers don't have a good relationship

it's a little uncommon but not unheard of for example my name is Benjamin but anyone I know reasonably well calls me Ben granted that is a derivative of my name or at least more identifiably a derivative

That’s one thing I find so irritating in so many shows. They always and repeatedly use names. I use my friends names like twice a year.

One could argue that Ilya did that on purpose because of his strained relationship with his family

When I lived in Bosnia they called me some pet name for American. I can’t say it. I don’t really know what it meant. I did answer to it

Yeah was a bit suprised when a friend of mine changed my name all of a sudden, because in german both names exist as full names.

I fully understand this even being from a western couture. At work I go by my last name, most do not know my first name. Social interactions with strangers I use my full first name. Only my closest friends and family call me Ben.

Full legal names are for official and professional settings, and for when someone is in trouble. The more complete the legal name, the more trouble they are in.

I'm not very well informed about Russian culture (which is shame), so I love hearing these things and learning new things ❤

as a Westerner I'm learning Russian on my own now and wondering if Ilyushka treats a conversation with his brother as an official setting because of how much he hates and dislikes him and the way his brother treats him like a bank account so ilyushka uses his full name. I could be way off base but just a thought of how I'm understanding Russian name culture and family dynamics

We Westerners do that too. When I’m talking to my brother I call him jackass instead of by his proper name.
