Right. For instance, when seatbelt laws were implemented, more people ended up in the emergency room. However, some people wrongly thought the increase in ER visits to the seatbelts causing injuries, when in reality, the people were in the ER because they were not in the morgue. Same situation with motorcycle helmets.

btw that 13%/50% statistic is ARRESTS NOT CONVICTIONS. Subsequently, black people also have the highest acquittal rates too. Which means a good amount of the arrests are bad arrests.

Poverty is a confounding factor to crime, historical policy has aimed to impoverish minorities

Another example is cold weather makes you sick. Cold weather by itself doesn’t necessarily cause illness by itself. Being in close proximity due to the cold weather makes germs spread easier. So it’s the staying indoors that is the confounding factor.

Black people are more likely to be convicted, where white people are more likely to be let off with a “warning”

Sharks and ice cream sales! Both go up in the summer (summer is the confounding variable)

People who own horses live longer probably. Because the upkeep on a horse is several thousands of dollars a year, and if you have extra thousands of dollars a year, you're doing all right

This was me with, “drinking wine helps you live longer”. When I actually looked into it, the group that was studied were wealthy, so a person living in a good area, probably eating healthier would live longer, but that isn’t because they drank a glass of wine every night.

Poli sci here- confounds are actually our worst enemy bc people can’t think critically anymore. I always simplify it with ice cream. EX: ice cream causes drowning. Reality: ice cream consumption rates go up in summer. So does drowning because more people are out swimming. The weather is the actual confounding variable that connects the two.

This is why I HATE that crime stats are based around arrests and not convictions. I've even said "What if you got arrested but didn't commit the crime? You'd now be listed in that stat even though you were innocent." and they still don't listen 😭

great content. Also, it doesn't help that a bunch of billionaires are buying up all of our news outlets to publish whatever they want.

I think one of my fav current examples is when conservatives say liberals/leftists are more mentally ill as if they’re not more likely to both acknowledge & seek care f that illness rather than just deny it exists

Sidebar, the whole 13/50 statistic has been misconstrued to be convictions instead of arrests like you said. We can’t even read correctly!

Man don't even get started talking about statistics because ppl almost NEVER interpret them correctly. They look at a headline, or a quick bar graph and run with it. Never actually look at the evaluate the data set

I second this message! It’s also very apparent that most people genuinely don’t know how to research or interpret data and results and they’re unaware that. Nor do they have access to a lot of credible academic articles due to the paywalls.
